Nightcrawler has been sent by his parents to Professor Xavier, to be enrolled in the Mutant Academy. Jean and Scott are a bit stand-offish at first with the German mutant, but soon learn to see him as any other kid. To help with his integration into the school, Xavier gives Kurt an image inducer so that he can appear to be normal. While Kurt is getting comfortable at the school, Msytique instructs Toad to infiltrate the X-Mansion. Under the guise of trying out for the Team, Toad is welcomed to join. Unfortunately, during the test phase, Toad's and Nightcrawler's battle lead them to the Danger Room. Barely avoiding the room's automated defenses, the pair are saved by Cyclops and Jean. Freaked out by what he has experienced, Toad bolts for the nearest door. Mystique later scolds him for failing in his mission. Kurt is also troubled by the encounter, because he feels like he put the other team members in harm's way. Scott convinces Kurt to stay with the team.
